What's Happening with Baby
The accelerated growth of the brain continues this week as your baby makes crucial neurological developments. As they add more fat to their body, their skin is no longer see-through and is looking more like a newborn's.
Your baby now weighs about 3 3/4 pounds and measures 16 3/4 inches long (the size of a large bunch of kale). As space becomes tighter, you might find them curled up in the classic fetal position, with their elbows and knees bent against their abdomen.
What You Might Experience
You will likely notice more and more Braxton Hicks contractions. These practice contractions occur throughout pregnancy at irregular intervals, but at this time they may start to be more frequent and you may feel stronger contractions during this month.
You may also have trouble sleeping because you are uncomfortable as your baby gets bigger. Try putting several pillows under your head, back, and between your knees to find a more comfortable position.
Key Things to Keep in Mind
It's crucial to distinguish between practice contractions and the real thing. Call your doctor immediately if you have any signs of preterm labor, such as contractions that become regular, stronger, and closer together.
As you prepare for birth, it can be helpful to learn about different types of delivery assistance. One such tool is a vacuum extractor. This is a suction device that can be applied to the baby's scalp to help the obstetrician gently guide the baby out during delivery.
