Week 5 of pregnancy

What's Happening with Baby
This week, your tiny one is officially an embryo, and remarkable transformations are taking place.
The basic framework for all major organs and body systems is being laid down through three distinct layers.
The inner layer will form internal structures like the lungs and liver, the middle layer will develop into the heart, bones, and muscles, and the outer layer is set to become the skin, nervous system, and eyes.
Amazingly, the heart is also developing and may even begin to beat rhythmically during this week, though it's too early to hear. Your baby is now roughly the size of an orange seed.

What You Might Experience
The surge in pregnancy hormones, especially hCG, continues, and this can bring about more noticeable symptoms. You might feel increased fatigue as your body works hard to support this new life.
Nausea, often called "morning sickness" (though it can strike at any time of day), may begin to make an appearance. Some women experience mood swings due to hormonal shifts.
Remember, every pregnancy is unique, and these symptoms can vary greatly from woman to woman.

Key Things to Keep in Mind
Continue taking your prenatal vitamin daily, ensuring it contains at least 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid. This nutrient is essential during these early weeks for the healthy development of the baby's neural tube, significantly reducing the risk of certain birth defects.
Focus on a nutritious and balanced diet to provide the building blocks your baby needs for healthy growth. Staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water is also important for your overall well-being and for supporting the pregnancy.
Be mindful of avoiding alcohol, smoking, and illicit drugs, as these can be harmful to your developing baby.
Discuss any medications you are taking with your healthcare provider to ensure they are safe during pregnancy.
