Week 14 of pregnancy

What's Happening with Baby
Your baby is becoming more and more active! This week, they can move their eyes, and their nose and taste buds are developing. The skin is starting to thicken, and hair follicles are beginning to grow under the skin's surface. Your baby can now open and close their hands and may even bring them to their mouth.
Your little one is now about 3 1/2 inches long (roughly the size of a nectarine) and weighs around 1 1/2 ounces. An interesting fact is that the male and female reproductive systems develop from the same embryonic cells. While the sex is determined at conception, it's around this time that the sex organs may become recognizable on an ultrasound, though it can still be tricky to see.

What You Might Experience
As some of the less pleasant symptoms of the first trimester, like nausea, begin to subside, you might find your appetite increases. Many women also start to feel they have more energy during this time. With an increased appetite, it's a good idea to continue focusing on a healthy, balanced diet to support steady weight gain.
It's never too late to focus on good habits. Prenatal vitamins continue to be important throughout pregnancy. If you have any questions about vitamin supplements, don't forget to consult your doctor to ensure you're getting everything you and your baby need.

Key Things to Keep in Mind
Your doctor might discuss optional prenatal screening tests with you soon. Tests like the triple or quadruple screen (a blood test) or an amniocentesis can screen for certain conditions like Down syndrome and neural tube defects. These tests are typically offered between the 15th and 18th week of pregnancy if you choose to have them.
As you start sharing your wonderful news with more friends and family, remember that everyone reacts differently. For example, future grandparents might express feeling "too young" for the title, even if they are very excited. Try to be supportive and affectionate as your loved ones process the news and this exciting new chapter in your family's life.
